Tasting - Dr Loosen Dr L Riesling 2020

For my second tasting, I asked my roommate and friend, Emma (who has taken this course in the past), to recommend her favorite wine.  Emma enjoys Rieslings and tends to purchase them over any other type of wine.  I purchased this specific bottle of Riesling for us to taste based on the wine review at Kroger.  Here is our overall review of the Dr Loosen Riesling!

Name: Dr Loosen Dr L Riesling

Variety: Riesling

Country of Origin: Germany

Region of Origin: Mosel Valley

Vintage Year: 2020

Price: $16.49

Kroger Wine Review: It embodies the delicate and racy style that is characteristic of Riesling grown in the slate-soil vineyards of the Mosel Valley.  This wine offers alluring aromas and flavors of delicate flowers, ripe apple, green apple, and a hint of mineral notes.  (90pts, Wine Enthusiast).

Wine Folly: Referenced from pages 158 and 159, Riesling.  I definitely got the scents of petroleum and green apple.  Strong flavors of beeswax and green apple on the palate.  The high aromatic intensity was noted, as the scent was very harsh.  I did not taste lemon or wet slate flavors, which are characteristic of German rieslings.

Personal Review:  I personally chose this specific Riesling based on the wine review at Kroger.  I had never tried a Riesling before and was very surprised by the sweetness of this wine.  It had very dry and bitter scents of apple and petroleum, which almost burnt the nose.  The taste, however, was almost the complete opposite, with very sweet flavors of honey and floral on the palate.  I would recommend this wine to others and would definitely drink it again.

Emma's Thoughts:  Emma commented on the harsh scent of the wine and its sweet taste, "the smell is very bold but the wine tastes subtly sweet like honey.  I was honestly scared that I wouldn't like this Riesling based on the smell alone, but I was very pleasantly surprised by the taste."

Riesling wine tasting with Karin and Emma on 01/18/22.
